Work packages in the Preparatory Phase Study

The work in the preparatory phase study of KM3NeT has been organised in different work packages. Each work package has its own coordinator and executive committee, responsible for the progress of the work in the package. At regular meetings the work package coordinators report to the project steering committee, the executive committee in the preparatory phase study of KM3NeT.

WPA - Management of the Preparatory Phase study

Objective: management of the Preparatory Phase Study as a whole.

WPB - Political Convergence

Objectives: Ensuring a formal, coordinated, approach at a high political level providing all necessary, up to date, background information and administratice support for a continuous consultation process between the relevant national authorities.

WPC - Legal, governance, financial engineering and site issues

Objective: Prepare the legal form and governance model documents, negotiate access rights to sites, deliver a financial engineering plan for the construction of KM3NeT, provide a business plan for its operation phase.

WPD - Strategic issues and international networking

Objectives: Assess issues related to the extendibility of the KM3NeT infrastructur and explore and foster possibilities of additional funding and/or personpower resources from countries not currently involved in KM3NeT.

WPE - Marine and environmental agencies and networks

Objectives: Create the organisational structure that will install,operate and develop the KM3NeT Marine, Environment and Geosciences Observatory (KM3NeT-MEGO) of the infrastructure and ensure sufficient integration with ESONET and EMSO and other relevant initiatives.

WPF/L - Production Preparation and Industrial Partnership for Production Preparation

Objectives: Prepare the mass production in the construction phase of the detection units of the telescope and produce a pre-production model of these units. Identify suitable locations for mass production of detection units of the telescope and develop a human resource plan for the construction phase. Prepare the tendering procedure for components to be subcontracted by seeking expressions of interest from industry.

WPG - Industrial partnerships for auxiliary vessels

Objectives: Define shore to site transportation and deployment requirements, shore infrastructure, surface vessel requirements, demonstrate suitability of vessel types and develop training program for the vessel personnel. Identify qualified suppliers.

WPH/M - Industrial production for deep sea components and Industrial Partnership for deep sea infrastructures

Objectives: Prepare production/acquisition reports for the components of the deep-sea infrastructure. Define procedures for the acquisition of chartering of deep sea remotely operated vehicles and tools. Identify qualified suppliers to act as partners in the construction and installation of deep sea infrastructures.

WPI/N - Data and Control and User support and Impact Assessment

Objectives: Create framework for the handling of the neutrino telescope data. Investigation of the needs and requests of the user communities in and beyond the KM3NeT consortium concerning data dissemination, data formats, computing support and infrastructure operation. Assessment of the impact of KM3NeT on the European Research Area (ERA)
