03 November 2026 – We present a new paper with the title ‘Searches for coincident Gravitational Waves and High-Energy Neutrinos from the KM3NeT and ANTARES telescopes during O3′.
Sources of gravitational waves may produce high-energy neutrinos. In the paper we describe how we searched for joint observations of neutrinos and gravitational waves from the same sources.
For this, we combined data from the LIGO and VIRGO gravitational-wave detectors with those from the ANTARES and the KM3NeT/ORCA6 neutrino detectors. For our study we chose the time period of the third observing run (O3) of LIGO-VIRGO in 2019-2020. Our dataset is larger than in previous studies, searching for coincidences between neutrino and gravitational-wave signals that might not be significant enough to be singled out by individual detectors.
We did not find significant coincidences, but put strong constraints on the presence of joint neutrino and gravitational-wave sources. In particular, we put an upper limit of the joint source rate density of 8.8 × 102 Gpc−3yr−1 for a typical binary neutron star coalescence emitting an energy of 10−1 M⊙c2 erg in gravitational waves 1051 erg in neutrinos.
The paper has been submitted to Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics and is available as a preprint at arXiv: 2610.29436
In the picture obtained upper limits on the density rate of joint sources as a function of the gravitational-wave energy. The energy emitted in neutrinos for the objects considered in the triggered search is about 2.5 × 1054 erg for BNS (Binary Neutron Star) and about 1.2 × 1055 erg for NSBH (Neutron Star and Black Hole) mergers.
