Eye of a neutrino telescope

06 March 2026 – Photographer Hugo Pardinilla won the 3rd jury-prize in the Global Physics Photowalk 2025 with his amazing photo of a photomultiplier in one of our optical modules. He gave it the title “Eye of a Neutrino Telescope”. We wholeheartedly congratulate him on this award and are delighted that he was inspired by the beauty of the very heart of our detectors.

The photo was selected from hundreds of pictures submitted by more than 100 photographers across the U.S., Europe and Asia. The Global Physics Photowalk is organised by the Interactions Collaboration, an international network of particle physics institutions.

This is how Hugo describes his motivation:

When I heard about the Photowalk, I had just completed a master’s degree in art direction, during which I worked as an apprentice photographer. I have long been interested in scientific research, particularly the living world, to the point that I made biodiversity in art the subject of my dissertation.

It was this natural curiosity for science that prompted me to take part in the Photowalk. The visit to the CPPM [the institute in Marseille hosting the ORCA detector site – editor] was a wonderful opportunity to surprise myself and challenge my photographic practice. The location and scientific equipment allowed me to work on unusual images and create beautiful compositions, resulting in a series of colorful and abstract photos. I am proud to say that the jury liked the result!

Art and science are sometimes seen as opposites, but in reality these disciplines feed off each other, and I hope to have another opportunity to bring them together, whether through photography, photo editing, graphic design, or in a broader artistic direction.”
